This week, we are especially thankful for Grandmas.
On Tuesday morning, we got the call—our little one had spiked a fever of 102. With both of us facing busy weeks at work, we weren’t quite sure how we’d manage time off. We were able to split the first day, each taking turns to get some work done. but with daycare’s 24-hour fever-free rule, we knew we needed help.
We called my mother-in-law right away. She still works full-time, but thankfully, her employer is flexible. Without hesitation, she came to spend the next day with our baby girl.
Despite our efforts, the fever continued spiking whenever the medication wore off. I took Thursday off to be with her— knowing how hard it is to let someone else care for your sick baby. But as she showed no signs of improvement, I started worrying about the days ahead. That’s when I called my mom.
Without a second thought, my mom—who lives five hours away—packed up and drove straight to us. She stayed from Thursday night through Tuesday noon, giving us the extra support we desperately needed.
I had planned to go back to work on Friday with a full patient caseload, but life had other plans. I woke up that morning with a fever, chills, and a sore throat myself. Thankfully, since my mom was there, I could rest, knowing my baby was in the best hands.
By Saturday, our little one still wasn’t eating, was lethargic, and her fever hadn’t broken. We took her to urgent care, where they discovered a double ear infection and a sore throat. She started antibiotics that day, and we finally felt like we were on the road to recovery.
The next day, we started seeing glimpses of her usual energetic, happy self—but they didn’t last. She was still so tired, battling this bug. After her afternoon nap, we noticed a rash spreading across her body. Was it an allergic reaction to the antibiotics? A viral rash? We had no idea. So, back to urgent care we went. Even the doctors weren’t sure, but to be safe, they switched her medication.
Finally, we could see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I know that kids get sick—especially those in daycare. It’s inevitable. But this week would have been so much harder without the incredible support of our family
Having our mom’s step in when we needed them most was an incredible blessing. Their unwavering support turned a stressful, exhausting week into one filled with love and comfort. There’s something about a grandma’s presence that brings reassurance and peace—because they always know just what to do.
